One sure way to entice your kid to get out from in front of the hypnotizing glare of the computer screen and outside into the fresh air is with a swing set. Even if they insist on mingling an ever-present high tech gadget with their backyard play time, i-Pods and swings do make a great combination. A friend of mine's kid spends hour after hour swinging back and forth in time to the music streaming from her i-Pod ear buds.

Recently one of my long established customers, a veteran of two sizable addition projects, approached me about designing and building him a swing set for his daughter. The rickety one she'd been playing on for the past five years had completely worn out. He complained to me of having to replace screws which had snapped in two on a fairly regular basis. I analyzed the design for flaws and found a few. The framing members were undersized and the fasteners were being overly stressed as a result.
I sat down and fired up one of my
architecture programs (commonly referred to as CAD for Computer
Assisted Design) and got to work. 
I took into
consideration warping, member sizing, bolt patterns and weatherproofing first. I made sure
that nothing ended up with exposed sharp edges. I analyzed the
directional forces and canceled them out. And finally I wanted it to be
able to be broken down easily for future resale. When and if your kid
outgrows this swing, you can put it up on craigslist and recoup
probably half of its original cost, it's built to last. It takes thirty
minutes to diassemble and loads easily in a pickup truck bed.
